Tinker vs. Des Moines

I think the armband situation was taken way out of hand. If there wasn't a riot or any sort of disruption in the school, then there was no reason for the students to get suspended. I don't see how wearing a black armband could be a distraction. I also don't think the rights of others were in jeopardy. As Americans, we are granted the freedom of speech. There is nothing wrong with expressing your own personal opinion. Also, you should not be punished for choosing to do so. I am just curious to know, to what extent are we allowed to express our personal opinions without being punished for them? I'm glad the District Court didn't see this  as a protest or uprising. The principle probably were afraid that the arm bands would cause conflict between other students. The students had no reason to get suspended because they didn't cause any disruptions.

Free Speech

There are many exceptions to free speech in America. Things such as bullying of any form or inciting terror are exceptions. There are ways to express your opinion without bashing others. I personally don't think our country is as strict as other countries when it comes to censorship. Korea, for example, has government censorship over websites, the radio, and what shows are sired on television. America is more open when it comes to free speech. Of course, if there was something extreme in the media that took free speech for granted, the government would most likely do something about it. It is something that just isn't in our everyday lives like other countries. I understand Canada's ban of lying in the news. However, if it is journalism or some sort of blog, I don't believe it should be banned because there is a difference between having false news broadcast and having your own personal opinion.

Assange and Wikileaks

I think Assange abused his right of freedom of speech. Exposing sacred information that can have a negative effect on our country as well as others is just unacceptable. There are some things that just aren't meant to be   seen by everyone, and this is one of the many. Yes, we are entitled to say what ever we want, but only when it comes to our rights. It seems like Assange had no real reasoning for exposing the information. Just like we are allowed to have the freedom of speech, we are also held responsible for not sharing certain information.

Electronic Media vs. Paper Media

Electronic media is used more frequently than paper media in this day in time. As technology continues to advance, more and more people use it. Yes, paper media is still used. But it is not as popular as electronic media. Electronics are faster and teenagers use electronics more than anything. Before electronic media, paper media was common. Now all you have the is go on Google and look at current events taking place. Electronics make society more interested in the media than paper does. Usually elders read newspapers and younger generations use electronics. Paper is the old way of spreading news and technology is the new and faster way. Looking on your cell phone is way more efficient than searching around for a newspaper article to read. also, paper media is usually about events that took place the day before. Electronics have more updated and recent news. You can find out about something the moment it happens. New papers also usually show local news or US news. Electronics have worldwide news.

Technology's Affect on the Sharing of Information

Technology affects sharing in many ways. Blogging websites, such as this, creates a faster way of sharing your ideas. Technology makes it possible to share news, information, and thoughts with the rest of society. Information is shared faster, which means more people are able to see information in a shorter period of time. The school portal, for example, is an easy way for students to view their homework with no trouble. Technology is used so much, that a person is more likely to respond to an email than to a letter in the mail. Those were all pros of technology, but their are also many cons. When someone shares information by technology that is public, anyone can see it. Therefore, if the information is perceived in a different way than it was meant to mean, people will respond negatively. The sharing of personal information on the internet is very dangerous, especially for teenagers. Technology is the best way for sharing information quickly and effectively, but only if it is used in the right way. Too many people take advantage of technology and the information shared by it. On the better side, technology allows us to receive news about our country and the rest of the world. It keeps everyone up to date.
